What these cards do

These cards return a card from your graveyard to your hand, a second use of a removal spell, a land, a creature or a combo piece. Eternal Witness and Regrowth return any card, Archaeomancer and Mnemonic Wall an instant or a sorcery, and Myr Retriever and Junk Diver an artifact when they die.

Green has the widest choice: Regrowth and Recollect for any card, Nature's Spiral and Elvish Regrower for a permanent card, Wildest Dreams and Restock for several. Spell decks reuse their best instant or sorcery with Archaeomancer, again whenever a blink effect returns it, and artifact decks rebuy their pieces with Scrap Trawler, Myr Retriever and Trusty Packbeast.

Rules note: most regrowth spells and abilities target a card in your graveyard, so a card exiled from the graveyard in response is not returned, and the effect does nothing if that card was its only target.

On this list, the most-played creatures that return instants and sorceries from the graveyard: Pinnacle Monk // Mystic Peak; Archaeomancer; Toph, Hardheaded Teacher; Mnemonic Wall; and Ardent Elementalist.

On this list, the most-played creatures that return artifacts to your hand: Scrap Trawler, Myr Retriever, Junk Diver, Workshop Assistant and Elder Owyn Lyons.

Cards that put cards back onto the battlefield are not listed. One entry per card, most-played first.

Frequently asked questions

What is regrowth in MTG?

Returning a card from your graveyard to your hand, named after the green sorcery Regrowth: "Return target card from your graveyard to your hand." Your graveyard holds the cards you discarded or that were countered, destroyed or sacrificed, and the instants and sorceries that resolved (rule 404.1); a regrowth effect puts one back where you can cast or play it again.

Can a regrowth card return a land?

Yes, when it says "target card" or "target permanent card". A permanent card is an artifact, battle, creature, enchantment, land or planeswalker card (rule 110.4a), so Nature's Spiral or Elvish Regrower can return a land, but not an instant or a sorcery.

What happens if the card leaves my graveyard in response?

It isn't returned. A spell or ability checks its targets as it resolves, a card that is no longer in the zone it was in when it was targeted is an illegal target, and one whose every target is illegal doesn't resolve (rule 608.2b).

Which creatures return spells again and again?

The creatures here that return an instant or sorcery when they enter, such as Archaeomancer and Mnemonic Wall, do it each time they enter the battlefield (rule 603.6a), so a blink or a bounce on them returns another spell; Myr Retriever and Junk Diver return an artifact each time they die (rule 603.6c).
