The Best Landfall Commanders in MTG: 9 Picks and 6 Enablers

The best landfall commanders as of October 2026, led by Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait, plus six lands-matter commanders that pair with landfall.

How our guides are made.

As of October 2026, the best landfall commander is Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait: it gives you an additional land play on each of your turns, and every land you control that enters may draw you a card. Two land plays, two cards.

What landfall means

Landfall is an ability word, not a keyword. Rule 207.2c says ability words "have no special rules meaning and no individual entries in the Comprehensive Rules": the word labels the ability, and the text after it does the work. On every landfall commander below, it reads "Whenever a land you control enters", the enters form of rule 603.6a, and triggers once for each land (rule 603.2c).

How the land arrives doesn't matter. Playing a land is a special action that uses one of your land plays (rules 116.2a and 305.2a); an effect that puts a land onto the battlefield isn't playing one and uses none (rule 305.4). Both trigger landfall, and a fetch land, the community name for a land that sacrifices itself to find another, triggers it twice. A land going to your hand or graveyard doesn't.

The best landfall commanders

1. Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait

Aesi, Tyrant of Gyre Strait, {4}{G}{U}, is a 5/5 that lets you play an additional land on each of your turns, and whenever a land you control enters, you may draw a card. A fetch land is two cards, and each draw is optional, so Aesi never forces you to draw from an empty library. It suits blue-green players who want a deep hand and a steady engine.

2. Omnath, Locus of Rage

Omnath, Locus of Rage, {3}{R}{R}{G}{G}, is a seven-mana 5/5 that makes a 5/5 red and green Elemental token whenever a land you control enters. Whenever Omnath or another Elemental you control dies, it deals 3 damage to any target, so even a board wipe fires back. It suits red-green players who want an army of big bodies and don't mind a slow start.

3. Tatyova, Benthic Druid

Tatyova, Benthic Druid, {3}{G}{U}, is a five-mana 3/3 whose whole text is one landfall ability: whenever a land you control enters, you gain 1 life and draw a card. Unlike Aesi's, that draw isn't optional, so count your library in long games (rule 121.4). It suits blue-green players who want a simple engine: every land is a card and 1 life.

4. Mole Man, Moloid Master

Mole Man, Moloid Master, {2}{G}, is a three-mana 1/1 that lets you play lands from your graveyard, and whenever a land you control enters, it makes a 1/1 green Minion token named Moloid that may mill a card when it attacks. It suits mono-green players who like a loop; more cards that let you play lands from your graveyard back it up.

5. Tannuk, Memorial Ensign

Tannuk, Memorial Ensign, {1}{R}{G}, is a three-mana 2/4 whose landfall ability deals 1 damage to each opponent and, the second time it resolves in a turn, draws you a card. One land a turn is a slow burn; a second land each turn makes it a card engine as well. It suits red-green players who like pressure on everyone.

6. Tifa Lockhart

Tifa Lockhart, {1}{G}, is a two-mana 1/2 with trample whose landfall ability doubles her power until end of turn, using her power at that moment (rule 701.10b), so it compounds: four lands in one turn take her from 1 power to 16. As your commander, her combat damage counts toward commander damage (21 or more combat damage from the same commander, rule 903.10a). She suits mono-green players who love one huge turn.

7. Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor

Obuun, Mul Daya Ancestor, {1}{R}{G}{W}, is a 3/3 whose landfall ability puts a +1/+1 counter on target creature. At the beginning of combat on your turn, it turns a land you control into an X/X Elemental creature with trample and haste until end of turn, X being Obuun's power. It suits red, green and white players who want their lands to attack.

8. The Necrobloom

The Necrobloom, {1}{W}{B}{G}, is a 2/7 whose landfall ability makes a 0/1 green Plant token, or a 2/2 black Zombie instead once you control seven or more lands with different names. Land cards in your graveyard have dredge 2: instead of drawing, you may return one to your hand and mill two. It suits white, black and green graveyard players.

9. Omnath, Locus of Creation

Omnath, Locus of Creation, {R}{G}{W}{U}, is a 4/4 that draws a card when it enters. Its landfall ability counts its resolutions each turn: the first gains you 4 life, the second adds {R}{G}{W}{U}, and the third deals 4 damage to each opponent and each planeswalker you don't control. Later ones do nothing. It suits four-colour players who make three lands enter a turn.

Lands-matter enablers that pair with landfall

None of these six has a landfall ability; they serve lands matter, a community term for extra land plays and recycled lands.

Hearthhull, the Worldseed

Hearthhull, the Worldseed, {1}{B}{R}{G}, is a Spacecraft that can be your commander (rule 903.3). Tap your other creatures to station it with charge counters. With 2 or more counters, {1}, {T} and a sacrificed land draw two cards and grant an additional land play; at 8 or more it's a 6/7 flier, and each land you sacrifice costs every opponent 2 life. It leads World Shaper, for land-sacrifice decks.

Szarel, Genesis Shepherd

Szarel, Genesis Shepherd, {2}{B}{R}{G}, is a 2/5 flier that lets you play lands from your graveyard, each using a land play (rule 305.2a). Whenever you sacrifice another nontoken permanent on your turn, it puts +1/+1 counters equal to its power on another creature, so a cracked fetch land grows your board and comes back next turn. It suits sacrifice players.

Yuma, Proud Protector

Yuma, Proud Protector, {5}{R}{G}{W}, is a 6/6 that costs {1} less for each land card in your graveyard. When it enters and whenever it attacks, you may sacrifice a land to draw a card, and each Desert card put into your graveyard from anywhere makes a 4/2 green Plant Warrior token with reach. It leads Desert Bloom, for players who build around Deserts.

Titania, Voice of Gaea

Titania, Voice of Gaea, {1}{G}{G}, is a 3/4 with reach that gains you 2 life whenever one or more land cards go to your graveyard, once per event (rule 603.2c). At your upkeep, with four or more land cards there and a land named Argoth, Sanctum of Nature that you own and control, the two meld into Titania, Gaea Incarnate, which returns all your graveyard's land cards to the battlefield tapped. It suits mono-green big-turn players.

Titania, Protector of Argoth

Titania, Protector of Argoth, {3}{G}{G}, is the other Titania: a 5/3 that returns a land card from your graveyard to the battlefield when it enters, which triggers your landfall abilities, and makes a 5/3 green Elemental token whenever a land you control goes to a graveyard from the battlefield. Every fetch land you crack becomes a body. It suits mono-green players who sacrifice lands for value.

Slogurk, the Overslime

Slogurk, the Overslime, {1}{G}{U}, is a 3/3 with trample that gets a +1/+1 counter whenever a land card goes to your graveyard from anywhere. Remove three to return it to your hand, and when it leaves the battlefield, you return up to three land cards from your graveyard to your hand. Recast from your hand, it pays no commander tax (rule 903.8). It suits blue-green loop players.

Frequently asked questions

Is landfall a keyword?

No. It's an ability word (rule 207.2c): it has no rules meaning of its own and only labels the triggered ability after it.

Does landfall trigger once per land or once per turn?

Once for each land (rule 603.2c). An ability worded "one or more lands" triggers once per event, and Omnath, Locus of Creation and Tannuk count resolutions of the ability, not lands.

Does putting a land onto the battlefield trigger landfall?

Yes. Playing a land and putting one onto the battlefield both make it enter (rules 116.2a and 305.4). Only the landfall abilities of the land's controller trigger (rule 110.2).

Does a fetch land trigger landfall twice?

Yes: once when it enters, and once when the land it finds enters. With Mole Man, Szarel or another card that lets you play lands from your graveyard, replay it for two more.
