Reality Fracture is the MTG expansion that released on October 2, 2026, after prerelease events from September 25 to October 1, a digital launch on MTG Arena on September 29, and card previews that ran from the September 8 debut to the complete card gallery on September 18. Its set code is FRA. The story follows Jace Beleren, who now calls himself the Theorist and has built the Echoverse: a copy of the Multiverse with the Phyrexians, the Eldrazi and Nicol Bolas written out of history. For Commander players the set brings five two-colour Elder Sphinx legends, a planeswalker-token engine called empower Jace, prepared creatures that carry a spell with them, Heartwood mana tokens, eight planeswalkers and dozens of alternate-history versions of legends you already know. One Commander deck, Multiverse Reforged, released alongside the set, together with five single-colour Foundations Commander decks. Product details are on the publisher's product pages, and every Commander deck follows the Commander rules, section 903 of the Comprehensive Rules.
This guide was first written from the cards previewed by September 13, 2026: 146 distinct cards in our MTGJSON-fed card data, with the set then flagged as a partial preview. The full set is in our card database now: MTGJSON's build of October 5, 2026 lists 290 cards in the main set and 461 with every variant, and no longer flags Reality Fracture as a preview. We checked this guide against that build on October 24, 2026. The card names and mana costs below match the released cards, one card was renamed between preview and release, and the set has an eighth planeswalker; counts described as from the previews are still the preview counts. Dates and product facts are quoted from the publisher's announcements listed under Sources, with the day we read them.

Japan was on schedule for everything. Some of those products could land after the prerelease, others after the October 2 release.
What is Reality Fracture?
After the trauma of the Phyrexian invasion, Jace fragmented into several selves, and the dominant one, the Theorist, became obsessed with rewriting reality. He built the Echoverse, an alternate reality meant to be a Multiverse free of suffering: a reproduction of every plane, minus the ones he judged too great an evil. The Phyrexians, the Eldrazi and Nicol Bolas never happened there. To pursue the plan without opposition he cut away the dissenting parts of himself, including the honest voice that questioned it, and he now rewrites memories and free will without restraint. His goal is to stabilize the false Multiverse by overlaying it onto the real one; the exiled, honest part of Jace is trying to undo it before the Echoverse consumes the true Multiverse.
The set is centred on Echoverse Arcavios, where Hexhaven Academy rises as a tower built over concentrated leylines. Five founder Elder Sphinxes each run a school: Fatehold (divination and prophecy), Theorix (reality-bending mathematics), Stingerquill (emotional manipulation and combat poetry), Konstrari (construct animation and architecture) and Vigorbloom (botanical healing and graft surgery). Each of those sphinxes is a mythic legendary creature in the set, and each is a natural commander.
The set's other signature is the echoed pair. In the publisher's words, "in the Echoverse, history looks very different, and that has reshaped the fates (and sometimes faces) of these legends." Every Play Booster includes a legendary card and its Echoverse alternate (three echoed-pair cards per booster), so Lyra, Archangel of Dawn arrives next to Lyra, Tolarian Archangel, and Liliana the Repentant next to Liliana the Faultless. For a format built on legendary creatures, that is a lot of new commanders in one set.
Is Reality Fracture a small set? No. The main set has 71 commons, 109 uncommons, 64 rares and 26 mythic rares, plus 10 common dual lands and 10 basic lands, before any of the borderless, showcase or Special Guests variants. MTGJSON lists FRA as a full expansion, and since the release our card database lists every card printed under the set code FRA as legal in Standard, Pioneer and Commander (MTGJSON build of October 5, 2026), the mythic Tarmogoyf reprint included. The Multiverse Reforged deck's cards are a separate set, Reality Fracture Commander, with their own legality.
The three mechanics you will meet at the Commander table
Empower Jace
Empower Jace is a new keyword action. When a card tells you to empower Jace N, you put N loyalty counters on a Jace planeswalker token you control. If you do not control one, you first create a blue Jace planeswalker token with 0 loyalty and two loyalty abilities: minus 1 to surveil 1, and minus 3 to draw a card. Twenty-five of the previewed cards empower Jace, spread across all five colours and colourless artifacts. Some examples:
- Protege's Awakening, {3}{U}: empower Jace 6, then draw a card. A common that makes a 6-loyalty planeswalker.
- Jace's Machinations, {2}{U}: an instant that lets you activate the loyalty abilities of your Jace planeswalkers at instant speed this turn, then empowers Jace 8.
- Overwrite the Multiverse, {4}{B}{B}: exile all creatures, then empower Jace X, where X is the number of creatures exiled. In a four-player game that is a board wipe that leaves you a planeswalker with a dozen loyalty.
- Theorist's Proxy, {1}{U}: flash, empower Jace 3 on entry, and for {U} you can sacrifice it to make your next spell this turn uncounterable.
- Avatar of Burgeoning Echoes, {G}{U}: landfall empowers Jace 2, and your planeswalkers gain a minus 10 that puts a +1/+1 counter on a creature for each land you control.
- Way of the Necromancer, {1}{B}: one of a cycle of legendary enchantments that empower Jace on entry and then keep paying your planeswalkers off. Most of the cycle hands every planeswalker you control an extra loyalty ability; this one keeps the trigger on itself and adds a loyalty counter to each of your planeswalkers whenever a creature you control dies.
Two cards also ask you to behold a Jace, which means choosing a Jace you control or revealing a Jace card from your hand: Countersculpt, {U}{U}, a counterspell that empowers Jace 1, and Theorist's Sanctum, an Island that enters untapped if you behold a Jace and can later empower Jace 2.
At a Commander table the Jace token is two things at once: a card-draw engine that survives creature wipes, and a lightning rod. Opponents attack planeswalkers, so a deck that leans on empower Jace wants blockers or a way to profit from the attacks: Ingris Stingerquill makes 2/2 Cadet blockers for {4}, and the Way enchantments turn each of those trades into loyalty counters.
Prepare
Prepare is a returning mechanic. It appears on creatures whose text box holds a second, inset frame containing a spell, and the card stays one card in every zone rather than two faces. A creature that enters prepared holds a copy of that spell in exile; while it is prepared, you may cast the copy, and doing so unprepares the creature. Some creatures prepare again at the start of your upkeep, so the spell comes back every turn. Sixteen previewed cards use it, including:
- Pompous Battlemage // Improvised Act, {R}: a prowess creature that enters prepared; Improvised Act ({R}, sorcery) lets you discard a card to draw a card.
- Stingerquill Voxmancer // Vicious Verse, a black-or-red hybrid one-drop that prepares itself at each of your upkeeps; Vicious Verse deals 1 damage to target opponent, every turn, for one mana.
- Bloodline Recollector // Ancestral Craving, {1}{B}: becomes prepared at each end step if three or more creatures died this turn; Ancestral Craving ({B}, instant) has target player draw three cards and lose 3 life. This is the set's serialized headliner, and a real card in an aristocrats deck.
- Diviner of Victory // Unwind History, {U}: enters prepared and gets +1/+1 until end of turn whenever you scry or surveil; Unwind History ({1}{U}, sorcery) bounces an opponent's creature with mana value 3 or less and surveils 1.
- Carnivorous Cultivator // Enroot, {1}{G}: deathtouch, enters prepared, and returns a land card from your graveyard to your hand whenever it deals combat damage to a player; Enroot ({G}, sorcery) puts a land from your library into your graveyard, which is the setup for the creature's own trigger.
For Commander the upkeep re-preparers are the interesting ones: a cheap spell you can recast every turn for the rest of the game is a slow engine that never runs out of cards, and Stingerquill Voxmancer gets there for a single mana.
Heartwood tokens
A Heartwood token is a new predefined token: a red and green artifact with "tap: add R or G". Think of a Treasure that does not disappear when you use it, and that counts as an artifact for every artifact payoff in your deck.
- Aerid Konstrari, {1}{R}{G}{G}: flying; creates a Heartwood when it enters or dies, and for six mana makes another one and gets +X/+0 for each artifact you control.
- Hungering Puppetbeast, {3}{G}{G}: makes a Heartwood on entry, then eats your other artifacts one at a time for +1/+1 counters and your choice of trample, hexproof or haste.
- Tenured Tethermage, {1}{R}{G}: when it enters you may sacrifice a land to create two tapped Heartwoods, and you can tap two untapped artifacts you control at any time, as often as you like, to put two +1/+1 counters on it. The new Heartwoods enter tapped, so they can pay that cost only after they untap. Our preview data listed it under the name "I've been pulling the strings the whole time!"; the released card is Tenured Tethermage.
- Woodwork Prodigy // Soul Tether, {2}{R/G}: prepares itself at each upkeep, and its spell, Soul Tether, creates a Heartwood token. A Gruul creature that ramps you every turn.
Returning keywords and ability words you already know
The set also brings back the keywords flashback (Generous Revival, Bestial Incursion, and Stingcaster Mage, a haste creature that grants flashback to an instant or sorcery in your graveyard), exhaust (Liliana the Repentant), convoke (Winter, Team Player) and ward, plus the ability words threshold (Null Summoner, Proft, Sinister Mastermind), domain (Fblthp, Knows the Way) and landfall, and a whole school of scry and surveil payoffs.
The best new cards for Commander, from the previews
Five new commanders: the Elder Sphinxes of Hexhaven
Each founder is a mythic legendary Elder Sphinx with flying in a two-colour pair, and each leads a recognisable archetype.
- Denzilore Fatehold, {1}{W}{U}{U}: flash, flying, and whenever you scry or surveil, put a +1/+1 counter on each creature you control. An Azorius go-wide deck where every cantrip and every surveil land pumps the team.
- Uldaros Theorix, {3}{U}{B}{B}: flying; when it enters, if you cast it, exile up to one nonland card of each card type from your graveyard, copy them, and cast any number of the copies with total mana value 6 or less for free (permanents become tokens). A Dimir self-mill deck that reruns its best spells every time the commander comes down.
- Ingris Stingerquill, {B}{R}{R}: flying; whenever a creature you control attacks, it deals 1 damage to each opponent; for {4}, create a 2/2 colourless Wizard Soldier token named Cadet, then your creatures gain haste. Rakdos tokens that hit every opponent at once: one damage per opponent for each creature you send in, so a four-player table takes three damage off a single attacker and a lot more on a wide turn.
- Aerid Konstrari, {1}{R}{G}{G}: the Heartwood commander above, for a Gruul artifacts deck that ramps into big colourless payoffs.
- Kwia Vigorbloom, {3}{G}{W}{W}: flying, vigilance, lifelink, ward {2}; whenever you gain life, create a colourless artifact token named Lotus that sacrifices for three mana of one colour, once each turn. Selesnya lifegain that turns every trigger into a burst of mana.
The echoed pairs: legends for the command zone or the 99
- Karn, Gilded Guardian, {2/W}{2/U}{2/B}{2/R}{2/G}: vigilance, trample, and it draws a card for each colour among your other artifacts when it enters. Hybrid symbols count toward colour identity (Comprehensive Rules 903.4), so this is a five-colour artifact commander, which is a rare thing.
- Vraska, the Cutting Glare, {B}{B}{G}: deathtouch, and if you control six or more lands when it enters, destroy target permanent an opponent controls (they get a Treasure). Golgari removal on a body.
- Vraska, Soul of Stone, {U}{R}{W}: your artifact creatures have vigilance, and every noncreature spell you cast makes a 1/1 Sculpture Treasure artifact creature. A Jeskai spellslinger commander that turns spells into mana and bodies.
- Liliana the Repentant, {1}{B}: mill two whenever another creature or planeswalker you control enters, and an exhaust ability, which you activate only once, that reanimates a creature or planeswalker for {5}{B} at sorcery speed. The publisher's own buyer's guide points at it for the black Foundations deck.
- Lyra, Tolarian Archangel, {1}{U}{U}: flying; at each end step, if you drew three or more cards this turn, create a 3/3 flying Angel. Mono-blue draw decks get a payoff that makes an army.
- Edgar, Ancient Bloodlord, {W}{B}: gain 1 life whenever another creature or planeswalker you control dies, and sacrifice one to grow him and give him menace. A two-mana Orzhov aristocrats commander.
- Kiora of Salt and Sand, {1}{G}{U}: whenever you attack, if you activated a loyalty ability this turn, untap an attacker and make it unblockable; your planeswalkers gain a minus 8 that creates an 8/8 hexproof Leviathan. The Simic home for the set's planeswalkers.
- Gideon the Oathless, {2}{B}: ward (discard a card), and pings an opponent whenever a creature enters under their control or whenever they activate a loyalty ability. Quietly punishing at a four-player table.
- Tinybones, Pocket Nuisance, {2}{B}: each opponent discards on entry, and any player discarding one or more cards deals 1 damage to each opponent, once per discard rather than once per card.
- Fblthp, Impossibly Lost, {1}{U}: when your opponents take combat damage on your turn, draw two cards, win the game if your library is empty, then shuffle him back into your library. A budget alternate win condition for mono-blue that you replay each time.
- Ghalta the Unstoppable, {8}{G}: costs X less where X is your greatest power, and gives all your other creatures trample.
- Thalia, the Survivor, {3}{W}, and her echo Geist of Saint Thalia, {1}{U}: one taxes your opponents' noncreature spells, the other discounts yours.
- Emrakul, the Exigent Doom, {10}: untaps all your lands when you cast it, has flying, trample and ward (sacrifice three permanents), and can be exiled from your hand for {3} to turn a land into a source of two colourless mana until you cast it from exile. A colourless legend that fits any deck as a top end.
Eight planeswalkers
Seven of them were in the previews this guide was first written from:
- The Theorist, Jace Beleren, {2}{U}{U}: you draw a card at the beginning of each opponent's draw step, which in Commander is three extra cards a turn cycle; plus 1 makes a 1/1 Illusion, minus 2 bounces an artifact or creature from each opponent, minus 6 draws three and puts counters on your team.
- Ajani Resolute, {1}{W}: gains loyalty whenever you gain life, and ultimates into a permanent +2/+2 for your creatures. Kwia Vigorbloom's best friend.
- Chandra, Chill of Compliance, {1}{U}{U}: a blue Chandra that surveils into noncreature spells, ramps them, and stuns creatures.
- Garruk, Curse Breaker, {3}{G}{G}: draws a card whenever a creature with power 4 or greater enters under your control, untaps lands, and makes 4/4 Beasts.
- Garruk, Veiled Butcher, {3}{B}{B}: exiles opposing creatures that would die, forces edicts and discards.
- Ajani Unrelenting, {4}{R}{R}: creates a Cadet token every time you activate a loyalty ability.
- Chandra, Torch of Defiance, {2}{R}{R}: the reprint, unchanged.
The eighth, Jace, Reality Sculptor, {3}{U}{U}, is a rare that reached our card data with the full set.
None of the eight has text allowing it to be your commander, so they all go in the 99 (Comprehensive Rules 903.3 and 903.3a). With empower Jace making a planeswalker out of thin air and the Way enchantments adding abilities to every planeswalker you control, a superfriends deck gets a lot from this set.
Spells and lands for the 99
- Return to the Light Realms, {7}{W}{W}: return all nonland permanent cards from your graveyard to the battlefield. A white mass reanimation spell.
- Loyal Tutor, {W}: search for a planeswalker card and put it on top of your library.
- Face Yourself, {5}{R}{R}: copy every creature a target player controls with haste; the copies are sacrificed at the end step unless you control a planeswalker. Pair it with a Jace token.
- Craterclaw Colossus, {4}{R}{R}{R}: haste, and when it enters, your creatures gain trample and get +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is the number of artifacts you control. A one-shot finisher for Heartwood decks.
- Hexhaven Invigorator, {G}{G}{G}{G}: vigilance; whenever it is dealt damage, search for up to that many lands and put them onto the battlefield tapped.
- Vindictive Triumph, {W}{B}{B}: exile a creature or planeswalker; if its mana value was 3 or less, it comes back tapped under your control, then gets exiled again at the beginning of the next end step.
- Solitary Cell, {R}{W}: a two-mana artifact that exiles an opposing nonland permanent with mana value 3 or less until it leaves, and later cashes in a legendary card for a card.
- The five allied-colour lands that enter tapped unless you control two or more other lands return: Deserted Beach, Shipwreck Marsh, Haunted Ridge, Rockfall Vale and Overgrown Farmland. Cheap, untapped most of the time, and now in a Play Booster near you.
- Tarmogoyf, {1}{G}: the mythic reprint. In a 40-life format it is a fine two-drop rather than a headline, but the reprint matters for players who want one for every format.
The Commander precon: Multiverse Reforged, and the five Foundations decks
Multiverse Reforged is the set's Commander deck, led by a four-colour Jace: Jace, Multiverse Architect, {1}{W}{U}{B}{R}, a white, blue, black and red legendary planeswalker. It is the only Jace in the Reality Fracture Commander card list, and our card database ties its foil printing to the Multiverse Reforged deck. As a planeswalker that is not a creature card, it can lead a deck only because its own text says it can be your commander (Comprehensive Rules 903.3 and 903.3a).
Five Foundations Commander decks released the same day, each single-colour and built as an entry point to the format:
- Calling All Angels (white), led by Giada, Font of Hope.
- Keen Engineering (blue), led by Sai, Master Thopterist.
- Wretched Ranks (black), led by Ghoulcaller Gisa.
- Reign of Dragons (red), led by Lathliss, Dragon Queen.
- Tramplesaurus Rex (green), led by Ghalta, Primal Hunger.
If you are choosing a first deck, the Commander hub and What are Commander brackets? explain how to talk about power level before you sit down.
