Set your average mana value, ramp count and commander, and get the land count your Commander deck wants, 33 to 42, with the reasoning behind it.

The calculator uses no model of its own. It starts from the band for your deck's profile, moves one land at a time for your ramp, your curve and your commander, and never goes under 33 without saying so. The bands and the rules of thumb come from our guide.
| Deck profile | Average mana value | Ramp pieces | Lands | Starts at |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low curve, plenty of cheap ramp | Under 3.0 | 12 or more | 33 to 35 | 35 |
| Low curve, less ramp | Under 3.0 | Fewer than 12 | 36 to 37 | 36 |
| Typical midrange deck | 3.0 to 3.4 | Any | 36 to 38 | 37 |
| Big spells, few cheap plays | 3.5 or higher | Any | 38 to 40 | 38 |
| Landfall or lands-matter | Any | Any | 40 to 42 | 40 |
Computed for a 99-card library with the hypergeometric distribution. The average is 7 times the land count divided by 99; the fourth land by turn 4 counts the opening seven plus the draws of turns one, two, three and four, because nobody skips the first draw in a multiplayer game, with no mulligan.
| Lands in the 99 | Average lands in seven | Openers with 3 or more lands | Fourth land by turn 4 |
|---|---|---|---|
| 33 | 2.3 | 43% | 53% |
| 35 | 2.5 | 48% | 59% |
| 36 | 2.5 | 50% | 62% |
| 37 | 2.6 | 52% | 65% |
| 38 | 2.7 | 55% | 68% |
| 40 | 2.8 | 59% | 73% |
Four rules the page relies on: a Commander deck is 100 cards including the commander (Comprehensive Rules 903.5a); every card but basic lands is a single copy (903.5b); a double-faced card is its front face while it sits in your hand or library (712.8a); in a multiplayer game your first mulligan is free (103.5c).

A typical midrange Commander deck runs 36 to 38 lands, and the calculator starts it at 37. A low curve with 12 or more cheap ramp pieces can run 33 to 35, a deck of big spells wants 38 to 40, and a landfall or lands-matter deck 40 to 42.
You set the average mana value of your 99, your ramp pieces and your commander's mana value, and switch on landfall or an aggressive low curve if your deck is built that way. It starts from the band for that deck profile and moves one land at a time, showing what moved the count.
