Game Changers MTG list: all 53 Commander cards, by colour

All 53 Commander Game Changers as of October 2026, grouped by colour, with the reason each card is on the list, how many a deck may run in each bracket, every change since the list launched in February 2025, and why Sol Ring is not on it.

How our guides are made.

The Game Changers MTG list names 53 cards as of October 2026; this page shows all 53 by colour, why each card is on the list, how many a deck may run in each bracket, and every change since the list launched in February 2025. The list is unchanged since February 9, 2026, when Farewell and Biorhythm were added and nothing was removed. A Game Changer is a card the Commander Format Panel has judged capable of dramatically warping a Commander game, and the list sets how many of them each of the five Commander brackets allows: a Bracket 1 or Bracket 2 deck runs none, a Bracket 3 deck runs up to three, and Bracket 4 and Bracket 5 decks run as many as they like. Mana Grove, a free MTG deck builder for Commander, keeps this list current and counts these cards in any decklist you paste into its bracket checker. The 53 cards are in the tables below, grouped by colour, each with a link to its card page and the reason it is on the list in one line.

Then: every change since the list launched with 40 cards on February 11, 2025, how Game Changers and the brackets fit together, why Sol Ring is not on the list, and a short FAQ. Every reason is quoted or paraphrased from the Panel's announcements under Sources, and the list is cross-checked against our card database, built from MTGJSON on September 14, 2026: the two agree on all 53 names.

What a Game Changer is, and what it is not

The Commander format page at Wizards of the Coast defines the term: "Game Changers are cards that can dramatically warp Commander games, allowing players to run away with resources, shift games in ways that many players dislike, block people from play, efficiently search for their strongest cards, or have commanders that tend to take away from more casual games." When the Panel launched the list in Introducing Commander Brackets Beta, the announcement that created the list, it explained the first 40 cards in groups: tutors that are "best-in-class" and "tend to find combo pieces or just homogenize the game", cards that "efficiently lock out your opponents' ability to use their cards", "extremely powerful fast-mana pieces", cards that "provide overwhelming resource advantage for their mana value", "combo and storm cards usually up to no good", two lands that "provide a huge mana boost", and commanders "that most players don't want to play against at, say, Bracket 2".

A Game Changer is not a banned card. A card on the Commander ban list is not legal in Commander at any bracket (the one opening is Bracket 1, which the Panel calls "a place where stretching the rules of card legality is okay" when the table agrees before the game); a Game Changer is fully legal, and the brackets only limit how many a deck carries. Neither list is part of the Comprehensive Rules: rule 903 defines the Commander variant (100 cards, one copy of each card other than basic lands, 40 life) and says nothing about brackets or Game Changers, which are the Panel's guidance for the conversation before a game. Since April 22, 2025 the two lists are linked in one direction, "cards being unbanned will immediately move to the Game Changers list", which is how five of the 53 arrived.

How many Game Changers each bracket allows

BracketNameGame Changers allowed
1ExhibitionNone
2CoreNone
3UpgradedUp to three
4OptimizedNo limit
5cEDHNo limit

The official page states it plainly: "Bracket 1 and 2 decks exclude Game Changers. Bracket 3 allows for up to three Game Changers. Brackets 4 and 5 allow for unlimited Game Changers." Because a Commander deck runs a single copy of each card (Comprehensive Rules 903.5b), "up to three" means three different cards from the list. The launch article says the Panel was "very careful with the legendary creatures we hit, as it essentially knocks them out of Brackets 1 and 2", so a deck led by Braids, Cabal Minion, Tergrid, God of Fright or Grand Arbiter Augustin IV is running a Game Changer.

The full Game Changers list (October 2026)

The reason column paraphrases the Panel's own explanation: the launch article explained the first 40 cards by group, and the April 22, 2025 and February 9, 2026 updates explained each addition. Where the only published reason is that the card came off the ban list, the row says so. Mana costs and card text are read from our card database.

How the list has changed, update by update

  • February 11, 2025. The brackets and the Game Changers list launch as a beta with 40 cards, and the Panel says "the exact cards on the Game Changers list is something we'll be carefully looking for feedback on during the beta period".
  • April 22, 2025. Two cards leave: Trouble in Pairs, "on par with some cards that are not on the list", and Trinisphere, which "tends to be strongest at the highest power levels". Eighteen join: Teferi's Protection, Humility, Narset, Parter of Veils, Orcish Bowmasters, Notion Thief, Intuition, Consecrated Sphinx, Necropotence, Deflecting Swat, Gamble, Crop Rotation, Worldly Tutor, Seedborn Muse, Natural Order, Food Chain, Aura Shards, Field of the Dead and Mishra's Workshop. The same day five cards come off the ban list and, under the new rule, straight onto this one: Braids, Cabal Minion; Coalition Victory; Gifts Ungiven; Panoptic Mirror; Sway of the Stars. The list stands at 61.
  • October 21, 2025. Ten cards leave. Four high-mana-value cards, Expropriate, Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur, Sway of the Stars and Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger, because "if you're spending tons of mana on something in Commander, it's going to be strong" and the Panel wants "to keep the focus on cards that can change the game in the earlier turns". Four commanders, Kinnan, Bonder Prodigy, Urza, Lord High Artificer, Winota, Joiner of Forces and Yuriko, the Tiger's Shadow, because "the easiest thing to opt out of is someone's commander". Deflecting Swat, "a notch below the free countermagic like Force of Will and Fierce Guardianship". Food Chain, a combo card that "doesn't risk causing trouble in the lower brackets". The same update removes the tutor restriction from the brackets, relying "on Game Changers to catch the most efficient tutors", and says the Panel would "generally like to avoid banning cards and let the Game Changers list be the tool in our toolbelt". The list stands at 51.
  • February 9, 2026. Two cards join. Farewell, "a large reset to a lot of what has happened in the game before it", placed "only at Bracket 3 and above" so that people "get into games that could have a Farewell only if they want to". Biorhythm, unbanned the same day: "like all of the previously unbanned cards, this will immediately be put on the Game Changers list as well". Lutri, the Spellchaser is unbanned too, except as a companion, and the Panel breaks its protocol for it: "this Otter is not going on the Game Changers list". The list stands at 53, and no bracket-level change is planned "until we've seen at least one MagicCon this year".

The Panel has published no Commander Brackets update or Commander banned-and-restricted announcement since February 9, 2026 (its December 11, 2025 update made no format changes), and the publisher's general banned-and-restricted announcements of May 18, June 29, August 10 and October 12, 2026 made no Commander change (the October 12 one changed Competitive Brawl only), so the February 9, 2026 list is the current one. Three cards have joined and then left, Sway of the Stars, Deflecting Swat and Food Chain, and Sway of the Stars is the only unbanned card to have done so. Trouble in Pairs, Trinisphere and the ten cards removed in October 2025, twelve in all, are off the list today and count toward nothing.

How Game Changers and brackets work together

The brackets ask you to describe your deck before the first shuffle, and the Game Changers count is the one mechanical part of that description; the rest, two-card infinite combos, extra turns and mass land denial, is about intent. A deck with zero Game Changers is not automatically Bracket 2: a Core deck also has no intentional two-card infinite combos, no mass land denial and only a few extra-turn spells, never chained. A deck with four Game Changers is at least Bracket 4 whatever else it does. Between the two, a Bracket 3 deck picks its three, and since October 21, 2025 the Panel describes it by game length rather than by early combos: at Bracket 3 you "should expect to be able to play at least six turns before you win or lose". The Panel expects the Game Changers found there to be "value engines and game-ending spells". The count is a floor, not a ceiling: a fourth Game Changer moves the conversation up a bracket, and cutting one does not move it down if the deck is built to combo. Read MTG Commander Brackets Explained for the full bracket descriptions and the pre-game conversation.

Why Sol Ring is not a Game Changer

Sol Ring costs {1} and taps for {C}{C}: a one-mana rock that makes two, sitting in the same fast-mana territory as Mana Vault and Grim Monolith. The Panel asked itself the question in the launch article, "Why isn't Sol Ring on the Game Changers list?", and answered: "You are correct that it qualifies as fast mana and would otherwise be there next to cards like Mana Vault. The truth is... it's Sol Ring. It's the most iconic card in all of Commander. It's something that since near the beginning has been the poster child for the format. Playing one Sol Ring is a universal truth, handed down from Sheldon Menery. Every deck gets exactly one Sol Ring to let it power up and accelerate a bit extra on occasion. That remains true."

So Sol Ring is legal at every bracket and counts toward nothing. Our card database, built from MTGJSON's Game Changer flag, agrees: none of its printings, more than 130 of them, is marked as a Game Changer. If your pod wants slower openings, that is a Rule Zero conversation, not a list.

Count the Game Changers in your deck

The quickest count is the bracket checker: paste your list, no account needed, and it names every Game Changer in it and reads the other bracket signals too. How the bracket checker reads a deck walks through the result.

To build or fix the list itself, open the Mana Grove deck builder, no account needed. The deck is already set to Commander, so add your cards and check them against the tables above. Legality checks run as you build, and the Validation tab reports deck size, copy limits, colour identity and every banned card by name, so a Mana Crypt does not hide in a hundred-card list. The flags come from our card database, built from MTGJSON, which carries both the Commander legality of every printing and the Game Changer flag this article is checked against. Deck Builder Basics walks through the tab, and the Commander hub is the place to browse commanders by colour before you start.

Game Changers by colour identity

All 53 Game Changers in one table, by colour identity as our card database records it in the MTGJSON build of October 24, 2026. Colour identity decides whether a card fits a Commander deck: a card can be included only if every colour in its identity is also in the identity of the deck's commander (Comprehensive Rules 903.4 and 903.5c), so a mono-white deck can run the seven white cards and the twelve colourless ones, and nothing else on the list. The same build flags exactly these 53 names as Game Changers, and they are the names the bracket checker counts.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a Game Changer in Commander?

Any card on the Commander Format Panel's Game Changers list, 53 cards as of October 20, 2026: the cards the Panel judges able to "dramatically warp Commander games". Nothing else counts, however strong it is.

How many Game Changers can a deck run?

None in Bracket 1 or Bracket 2, up to three different ones in Bracket 3, and any number in Bracket 4 or Bracket 5.

Is a Game Changer the same as a banned card?

No. A banned card is not legal in Commander at any bracket, though the Panel describes Bracket 1 as the place where a table can agree before the game to stretch card legality. A Game Changer is legal everywhere; the brackets limit how many you play. Since April 2025 every card the Panel unbans becomes a Game Changer on the day it is unbanned, with one exception so far, Lutri, the Spellchaser.

When did the Game Changers list last change?

February 9, 2026: Farewell and Biorhythm were added. Before that, October 21, 2025 removed ten cards, and April 22, 2025 removed two and added twenty-three.

Is Sol Ring a Game Changer?

No. The Panel says every deck gets exactly one Sol Ring, and it is legal at every bracket.

Can two decks with the same Game Changers be in different brackets?

Yes. The count is only one signal: two decks with two Game Changers each can sit in Bracket 3 and Bracket 4 if one is built around an early two-card infinite combo and the other is not. Combos, extra turns and mass land denial are judged separately from the count.

Does my commander count as a Game Changer?

If it is on the list, yes: the launch article says the Panel was "very careful with the legendary creatures we hit, as it essentially knocks them out of Brackets 1 and 2". Braids, Cabal Minion, Tergrid, God of Fright and Grand Arbiter Augustin IV are the three legendary creatures on it today, and any of them can lead a deck.
