How the brackets work

The Commander Format Panel describes five brackets. Each names what a deck is built to do and about how fast a game should run, so a table can agree on an experience before the first turn.

  1. Bracket 1, Exhibition (declared by you)

A theme first; games run at least nine turns

  2. Bracket 2, Core

Straightforward, wins you can see coming; at least eight turns

  3. Bracket 3, Upgraded

Strong synergy, up to three Game Changers; at least six turns

  4. Bracket 4, Optimized

Fast, consistent, no Game Changer limit; at least four turns

  5. Bracket 5, cEDH (declared by you)

Built for competitive play; could end on any turn

Game Changers are the cards the Panel lists as too strong for a casual table: none in Brackets 1 and 2, up to three different ones in Bracket 3, no limit in Brackets 4 and 5.

Three more barometers move a list up: mass land denial, two-card combos that end the game, and extra turns chained in succession. Brackets 2 and 3 allow extra turns only in low quantities.

Tutors and fast mana do not set a bracket on their own. Fast mana has never been one of the barometers, and the October 2025 update removed the tutor guideline; the most efficient tutors and mana rocks sit on the Game Changers list instead. As the February 2025 launch Q&A put it, every deck gets exactly one Sol Ring.

This tool reads Brackets 2 to 4 from the cards alone. Brackets 1 and 5 are declared by you, because intent is not something a decklist can show.

Criteria from the October 21, 2025 update; the Game Changers list used for each reading is dated on the result.

Frequently asked questions

What does the bracket checker tell me?

The lowest bracket your list's cards point to, from Bracket 2 to Bracket 4, with the Game Changers, mass land denial, extra-turn cards and two-card combos behind it. Brackets 1 and 5 depend on intent a decklist cannot show, so you declare those yourself.

Do I need an account?

No. Paste a list and check it without signing up. An account only raises how many lists you can check each minute.

Is it free?

Yes. Every check is free, with no daily or monthly cap, and Mana Grove shows no ads.

How current is the Game Changers list?

The checker follows the publisher's current Game Changers list, and every result names the date of the list it was checked against.
