Deck Recommendations Explained

How Tutor, our smart deck recommendations, generates suggestions, what the synergy score and the hint line on each pick actually mean, and how to steer them with feedback and filters.

How our guides are made.

Tutor is our smart deck recommendations model. The Suggestions tab uses it to recommend cards for the exact deck you are building. Here is how it works and how to make it work for you.

Where suggestions appear

  1. Open one of your decks and select the Suggestions tab. The same panel lives in the deckbuilder. When the picks come from the model, the panel is titled Tutor Suggestions.
  2. Recommendations need context: with fewer than 10 cards in the deck you will see "Add at least 10 cards to get personalized recommendations."
  3. Past 10 cards, suggestions load on their own and refresh as the deck changes, so there is nothing to trigger manually. Change the deck, and the list catches up.

How recommendations are generated

Tutor reads your mana curve, color identity, and the cards already in the deck, along with the cards in your collection, the format you are building in, and the way you play. Two different decks get two different lists: the picks are computed for what you are building, not for what is popular this week.

What you see on each pick

  • A synergy score. Every pick carries one: a scored ring on the card in the Suggestions tab, and a percentage next to the card name in the deckbuilder panel. It is how strongly Tutor scored that card against this deck, and it is what the list is ranked by. Higher means a closer fit for what you have built so far. It is a ranking signal, not a verdict on the card.
  • A short hint line. Most picks also carry one short line under the card name, built from signal Tutor already has: a card in your deck the pick pairs with, the archetype it supports, or the job it does and where that lands on your curve. Live examples: "Adds removal where your curve is light" and "Fills a light spot on your curve at 5 mana". When none of those signals is solid, Tutor leaves the line off rather than filling the space with something vague.
  • The score opens the detail. In the Suggestions tab, selecting the score opens Why this card?, which repeats that same hint line and lists the cards already in your deck that the pick is in synergy with.

The hint line is a pointer, not an argument. It names the signal that put the card on the list. It does not explain the card, walk you through an interaction, or make the case for playing it. Read it as a nudge toward the part of the deck the pick is aimed at, then judge the card yourself.

Steering the suggestions

  • Add puts a card straight into the deck. The next refresh takes the new card into account.
  • Dismiss hides a suggestion you do not want while you keep working on the deck. Your dismissal is kept as feedback for improving Tutor.
  • Filters and sorting narrow the list, including a budget filter so suggestions stay inside your price range.

Recommendations and your allowance

Suggestion runs count against the Tutor AI recommendations monthly allowance, which varies by plan: see the Pricing page for current numbers and the FAQ there for the fine print. Your remaining runs are under Usage (avatar menu → Usage). At the cap, suggestions pause until your monthly reset, or you can upgrade for more. Understanding Usage & Quotas covers how resets work.
