MTG Commander Precons 2026: Ranked, With Brackets

The 2026 Magic: The Gathering Commander precons so far: eleven ranked for a first deck by commander, colours and contents, each with its bracket reading, seven more listed, and Star Trek's four still to come.

How our guides are made.

As of October 2026, the Commander precon with the highest bracket reading on Mana Grove is World Shaper, from Edge of Eternities Commander (2025), the only precon we track that reads as Bracket 4 (Optimized), because of a single mass land denial card; no 2026 precon reads above Bracket 2 (Core). If you are looking for the strongest precon, we publish no power ranking: a bracket reading looks at the cards in each list, not at how well the decks play. Magic: The Gathering has released eighteen Commander preconstructed decks in 2026 so far, not counting Secret Lair drops or Collector's Edition versions. This guide ranks eleven of them: two with Lorwyn Eclipsed on January 23, five with Secrets of Strixhaven on April 24, and four with Marvel Super Heroes on June 26. Every one of the eleven is a legal 100 card deck out of the box that reads as Bracket 2 (Core) in our bracket checker, and every one of them contains Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower. The other seven, Turtle Power! from March and the six decks released on October 2, are listed below without counts, and Star Trek Commander adds four more on November 13. If you want the shortest possible answer for a first deck among the eleven: Quandrix Unlimited is the easiest to pilot, Witherbloom Pestilence is the easiest to upgrade, Avengers Assemble has the most new cards, and Blight Curse is the one that rewards learning the most. The boxes themselves are on the publisher's product pages, and every precon is built to the Commander rules, section 903 of the Comprehensive Rules.

The counts below come from our own card database, built from MTGJSON on September 14, 2026, and the land counts and average mana values still match our precon statistics as recomputed on October 23, 2026. The names and release dates of the seven unranked decks and of Star Trek's four come from the October 5, 2026 build. Where a claim is about the rules rather than the cards, it cites the Comprehensive Rules. Where a claim is about a set that has not been released yet, it says so rather than guessing.

Which precon is the strongest right now?

No bracket reading can name the strongest precon, because a reading is the lowest bracket a list's cards allow, not a measure of how well the deck plays. The highest reading we track belongs to World Shaper: the Edge of Eternities Commander deck led by Hearthhull, the Worldseed, released on August 1, 2025, and the only one that reads as Bracket 4 (Optimized). That reading rests on a single card, Planetary Annihilation, a sorcery that makes each player sacrifice all but six of their lands. Our bracket checker counts it as mass land denial, which Brackets 1 to 3 rule out, so any list that runs it reads as Bracket 4 or higher. World Shaper contains no Game Changer.

Counted by Game Changers instead, the one with the most is Deadly Disguise, from Murders at Karlov Manor Commander (February 9, 2024): it is the only precon we track with two of them, Jeska's Will and Seedborn Muse, so it reads as Bracket 3 (Upgraded).

No 2026 precon reads above Bracket 2 (Core), and none of them contains a Game Changer, so the bracket reading does not separate this year's decks; the ranking below compares eleven of them for a first deck instead. These readings cover the Commander precons on our precon hub, the oldest released in February 2023 and the newest in October 2026, read from the cards alone against the Game Changers list of February 9, 2026 and recomputed on October 26, 2026. Official policy also weighs intent and how fast a deck wins, which a decklist cannot show.

What a Commander precon actually is

A preconstructed Commander deck is a sealed product containing a complete, legal deck: 99 cards plus a designated commander. That is not a marketing claim, it is the format's construction rule. A Commander deck contains exactly 100 cards including its commander (rule 903.5a), runs a single copy of every card other than basic lands (rule 903.5b), and every card in it has to fit inside the commander's colour identity (rule 903.5c). A precon is built to satisfy all three before you open it, which is the entire point: you can sit down at a table with it the same evening.

We counted the contents of the eleven ranked decks. Every one of them is exactly 99 cards in the main deck plus its commander. None of them needs a single card added to be legal.

Each of the four Marvel decks also exists in a Collector's Edition with the same decklist and different treatments, so the four decks account for eight Marvel products in total.

Two of those commanders are worth pausing on, because they teach the rule that catches out more new builders than any other. Ashling, the Limitless costs {2}{R}, a mono red card by its mana cost, and leads a five colour deck. Invisible Woman costs {2}{W} and leads a four colour one. Colour identity counts every mana symbol in a card's rules text, not only the ones in its cost (Comprehensive Rules 903.4), and both cards have a cost printed in their abilities: Ashling's token sacrifice clause asks for {W}{U}{B}{R}{G}, and Invisible Woman's attack trigger asks for {R}{G}{W}{U}. That is where the extra colours come from.

Quintorius is a second special case. It is a planeswalker, not a creature, and it can lead a deck only because its own last line says "Quintorius, History Chaser can be your commander" (rules 903.3 and 903.3a). Without that line it would go in the 99.

What is actually inside the box

The eleven decks are not interchangeable. Counted card by card from our database, here is how they differ where it matters for a new player.

The Fantastic Four2 (Core)37194313.69
Wakanda Forever2 (Core)38237293.84

Three numbers in that table decide most of the experience.

The land count is the quietest and the most important. Every one of the eleven runs between 37 and 40 lands, which is the range experienced builders land on too. How many lands go in a Commander deck? explains why the number sits there and when to move it.

The average mana value, taken over the nonland cards because a land's mana value is 0, is how fast the deck feels. Quandrix Unlimited averages 2.39 and contains no card at mana value six or higher at all. Dance of the Elements averages 4.27 and carries sixteen cards at six or more. Those two decks want completely different evenings.

The new card count is the value question. The five Strixhaven and two Lorwyn decks are mostly reprints, twelve to fifteen cards new per deck. The four Marvel decks carry twenty nine to thirty six cards each that appear in that deck and not in the older card pool. Neither is better; a reprint heavy deck is a cheaper way to get cards you will reuse, and a new card heavy deck is a better way to play with things nobody at the table has seen.

The bracket is Mana Grove's reading of each list, from the cards alone and against the Game Changers list of February 9, 2026, the same reading our bracket checker gives. All eleven read as Bracket 2 (Core) and none of them contains a Game Changer, so the bracket does not separate them and the ranking below does not use it. Official policy also weighs intent and how fast a deck wins, which a decklist cannot show; What are Commander brackets? explains the scale.

Ranked for a first deck

The picks below compare the eleven decks counted above.

Easiest to play: Quandrix Unlimited

Green and blue, the lowest curve of the eleven at 2.39 average mana value, zero cards at mana value six or higher, and 27 creatures. Nothing in it is stranded in your hand because you missed a land drop. Zimone, Infinite Analyst costs {1}{G}{U} and makes your spells with {X} in the cost cheaper as it grows, which is a single mechanic to hold in your head rather than four.

Easiest to upgrade: Witherbloom Pestilence

Black and green, 39 creatures, and only two mana rocks, which sounds like a flaw and is actually the opening. It has the most obvious ten card list of any deck here, because the two cheapest upgrades in Commander, a signet and a land fetch spell, are both missing. Dina, Essence Brewer draws a card the first time you sacrifice a creature each turn, and a deck with 39 creatures never struggles to find one. Upgrading a Commander precon: the ten card method is the walkthrough.

Most new cards: Avengers Assemble

Thirty six cards that are new to the deck, the most of the eleven, and eight mana rocks, the most of the eleven. Three colours makes the mana harder than a two colour deck, so this is the pick if you already know how a Commander game goes and want the most unfamiliar cards for the money.

Rewards learning the most: Blight Curse

Three colours, 39 lands, and a commander that turns a drawback into a draw engine. Auntie Ool, Cursewretch draws you a card whenever minus one, minus one counters land on a creature you control, and makes an opponent lose life when they land anywhere else. That is a deck where the counters that look like they are hurting you are the plan. It also has room to grow: ten of its 99 cards cost six mana or more, which is ten slots a beginner will eventually want back.

The one to avoid first: Dance of the Elements

Not a bad deck, a bad first deck. Five colours, sixteen cards at mana value six or higher, the highest average cost of the eleven, and a commander whose token clause wants one mana of every colour. Come back to it once you have a mana base you understand.

What is still coming in 2026

Star Trek Commander is dated November 13, 2026, with four decks: Federation Fleet, Klingon Fury, Landing Party and We Are the Borg, each with a Collector's Edition version. Our card database carries the set, its date and those product names, and still flags the set as a partial preview, so this section states the date and the names, plus one notice from the publisher: on October 16, 2026 the publisher said that the Commander decks in North America, and the English-language Commander decks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, may arrive after the November 13 release, and that the French and German Commander decks there may arrive after the November 6 Prerelease events, as may the Collector's Edition Commander decks, with more Collector's Edition decks arriving after November 13. The Star Trek Commander decks guide covers the four decks and their dates.

Reality Fracture Commander is no longer upcoming: Multiverse Reforged released on October 2, 2026, alongside the Reality Fracture set and the five Foundations Commander decks listed above. Our Reality Fracture set guide covers the set and names the deck's commander.

Are Commander precons worth it?

For a first deck, yes, and for a specific reason: the three cards every upgrade guide tells you to buy first are already in the box. We checked all eleven ranked decks and every single one contains Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower. Ten of the eleven also contain Exotic Orchard, and nine contain Terramorphic Expanse.

The honest limit is that a precon is generally meant to be played against the other decks in its own release, not against a table of tuned decks. That is what the Commander brackets exist to talk about. Since the October 21, 2025 update, a precon is no longer the official reference point for any bracket, so judge each one by its list: all eleven here read as Bracket 2 (Core), and a table that has upgraded past that will feel it. What that bracket means for an actual list, and what moves a precon out of it, is in Commander decks by bracket.

Open any of them in the deck builder

Open the deck builder, no account needed. Set the commander, add the cards you want checked, and the Validation tab checks the three construction rules for you as you type: exactly 100 cards including the commander (rule 903.5a), one copy of each card other than basic lands (rule 903.5b), and colour identity against your commander (rule 903.5c). It also names any card banned in Commander; the current list is in the Commander ban list, explained. If you would rather describe the deck you want in a sentence and have it drafted for you, Grover, our AI deck assistant, does that without an account too, and How to build a Commander deck with an AI assistant walks through it. The Commander hub is where to browse commanders by colour, and the deck browser is where to look at lists other players have made public. When you want a deck of your own rather than a precon, how to build a Commander deck walks through it in seven steps.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Commander precon to buy in 2026?

Among the eleven decks ranked here, for a first deck, Quandrix Unlimited: the lowest curve of the eleven, nothing above five mana, and two colours. If you already play, Avengers Assemble has the most cards you will not have seen, at the cost of a three colour mana base.

What are the next Commander precons?

Star Trek Commander on November 13, 2026, with four decks: Federation Fleet, Klingon Fury, Landing Party and We Are the Borg. On October 16, 2026 the publisher said the Commander decks in North America, and the English-language Commander decks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, may arrive after that date, and the French and German Commander decks there after the November 6 Prerelease events, as may the Collector's Edition Commander decks, with more of them after November 13. The Star Trek Commander decks guide has the details. The most recent releases were Multiverse Reforged with Reality Fracture and five Foundations Commander decks, all on October 2, 2026.

How many Commander precons were released in 2026?

Eighteen so far, not counting Secret Lair drops or Collector's Edition versions: two with Lorwyn Eclipsed in January, Turtle Power! with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles in March, five with Secrets of Strixhaven in April, four with Marvel Super Heroes in June, and six on October 2 (Multiverse Reforged with Reality Fracture, plus five Foundations Commander decks). This guide ranks the eleven from Lorwyn Eclipsed, Secrets of Strixhaven and Marvel Super Heroes. The four Marvel decks each also have a Collector's Edition with the same list.

Are Commander precons legal out of the box?

Yes. All eleven decks ranked here are exactly 99 cards plus a commander, which is the 100 card requirement in rule 903.5a, and all eleven satisfy the singleton and colour identity rules (903.5b and 903.5c). You can play one the day you open it.

What is the easiest precon for a beginner?

Of the eleven ranked here, Quandrix Unlimited, on the numbers: average mana value 2.39, no card at mana value six or above, 37 lands and two colours. Silverquill Influence is the next easiest at 2.97 average.

Is 37 lands enough for a Commander deck?

Six of the eleven ranked 2026 precons run exactly 37, three run 38, and the other two run 39 and 40. Thirty seven is a reasonable default for a deck with a normal curve; a deck that costs more wants more. How many lands go in a Commander deck? covers when to move off it.

Do precons come with the same staple cards?

Some of them. Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower are in all eleven ranked decks. After that they diverge quickly: Fellwar Stone is in five of the eleven, Cultivate in three, Swords to Plowshares in two.

Are Commander precons good for building a collection?

Yes, as a start: every one of the eleven 2026 precons ranked here contains Sol Ring, Arcane Signet and Command Tower, and ten of them also contain Exotic Orchard. The Strixhaven and Lorwyn decks are mostly reprints (12 to 15 new cards each), while each Marvel deck carries 29 to 36 cards new to it.

Which Commander precons are balanced against each other?

The decks of one release are generally meant to be played against each other, not against tuned decks. All eleven 2026 decks ranked here read as Bracket 2 (Core) with no Game Changers, but a shared reading only means no card in any of them pushes the deck higher, not that they play evenly against each other.

What is a preconstructed (premade) Commander deck?

A sealed product holding a complete Commander deck built to the format's deck rules: 100 cards including its commander, one copy of each card other than basic lands, all inside the commander's colour identity (903.5a, 903.5b, 903.5c). You can play it the day you open it, unless a card in it has been banned since the deck came out.
